The important features of the department are as follows:

The Cultivation of Global Workforce：Emphasis on foreign language learning and foreign learning opportunities:

To boost the competitiveness of our students for a future career, DICE provides students with solid training in foreign languages. Besides English, the undergraduate students in the department are required to learn one more foreign language (Spanish, German, French or Japanese) for at least two years.

In order to broaden the students' vision, we not only periodically invite internationally and domestically renowned scholars specializing in international and comparative education to deliver lectures, but also encourage students to go to other countries, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, and Vietnam for short-term field trips or long-term academic exchange programs. Because of this, DICE has already established academic links with some well-known institutions of higher education abroad, a prominent example being the Institute of Education, University of London.

In the period from 2005 to 2014, there were more than 120 students (including BA, MA and PhD students) going to England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Japan, Spain, Hong Kong and Mainland China for short-term exchange or long-term studies. At the same time, there are also full-time international students from Canada, United States, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Burma, Indonesia, El Salvador, Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China enrolled in BA, MA, and PhD programs in DICE. These students together with exchanged students from Germany, Japan and Mainland China have contributed to a lively multicultural learning environment for all.


Closing the Education – Work Gap:

DICE provides academic courses to foster students’ development in knowledge and skills in the field of international and comparative education and prepare students for attaining advanced degrees in the field. In addition, practical courses such as summer domestic practicum, summer overseas practicum, and international volunteer program are offered each year to give students hands-on experiences and apply theories and skills learned in the classroom to real-life situations.

Since 2009, many students have participated in the annual summer international volunteer program serving countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. Some students have also successfully completed summer practicum in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, and Japan.

Since 2014, the incoming graduate students are offered opportunities to engage in long-term practicum overseas. Students can apply for long-term practicum and work at the partnership organizations for up to 1 year in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, and Japan.


Building a Solid Foundation for further International and Comparative Education Research

DICE strives to study not only the societal and economical contexts, as well as the educational systems, of well-developed countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Russia, but also less developed countries in South America and Southeast Asia. In addition, in accordance with the focuses of our University, DICE also targets its research on the education in the Southeast Asian region, the education of Overseas Chinese, and the education of children of Taiwanese traders living in Mainland China. We hope through the study of above countries and regions, students are able to build a solid foundation for their further research in the fields of comparative and international education.
